I'm Back!

Well, here I am again after a very long absence and first of all, I'm really sorry for just disappearing like that! When I last put up a writing-related post, I'd never have believed it would be nearly 12 months before I blogged about writing again. What I thought would just be a month away from my desk actually turned into a 12 month (almost) "sabbatical", the first one I've ever had in 18 years of freelance writing and journalism.

I'd like to say that I've travelled the world, set up a commune in the back garden, had a tattoo, got married (or at least engaged) and been performing in a one-woman play on Broadway. The truth is, I've mainly been setting up a new crafting business (www.melissalawrencedesigns.com) and trying to get my act together in my personal life which, judging by the posts I put up this time last year, was something that urgently needed doing.

Anyway, here I am at the start of another new year (my favourite time) and full of hope and optimism (it usually lasts until around January 7) about writing, crafting and personal dreams and ambitions.

I've spent quite a lot of my "sabbatical" trying to work out what I actually want to write, especially as I'm not going to be writing "full-time" now, in fact just one day a week (or night in my case) at the moment.

I think I've come up with a plan at last (I've also come to a decision about the whole e-publishing/self-publishing malarky but more of that another time) and I've just checked it against my 12 Year "Vision of Success" goals which I set this time last year and it still puts me on track. However, one of those 12 years has now gone (gulp!) without me getting much closer to where I want to be in 2024 so it's probably time to stop blogging and get down to some actual writing. I have to keep telling myself that I've done this before and I can do it again but it still feels very much like my first day at school!

However, I'll endeavour to keep writing and to keep blogging. The posts may be less frequent than before I went AWOL but I promise not to fall off the face of the writing cliff this time!

I hope all your own hopes and ambitions begin to reach fulfilment in 2013 and I wish you all a Happy New Writing Year. Remember to "Wish it, dream it, do it" before another 12 months has gone by in a heartbeat.

  1. I've only just had time to get here - we are snowed in and life is always so much more complicated when that happens. But I'm glad to see you blogging again and look forward to seeing more. I am full of admiration for your 12-year plan. I can't get further than the current year. I'm also looking forward to your thoughts about self-publishing since that's a route I might go down.

  2. Hi Vanessa. Great to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about the snow. It is pretty bad where I am too actually, which is unusual. Just went out to take some photos of the snow patterns for crafting and very slippery so came back in pretty quickly. Hope things improve for us both soon! I'm getting quite a bit of writing done in just one day a week and keeping the anti-writing demons at bay just about! Hope to blog about self-publishing very shortly so watch this space.

Portfolio Career

I have been telling everyone recently that I now have a "portfolio career". Most people don't know what I mean by this (someone even said they'd have to "Google" it!) but it's really just a fancy way of saying that you have fingers in several different pies. I have been a "professional" writer since 1995 although I have always been a writer of some sort, ever since I was at school. During this time, I have stuck pretty religiously to writing and only occasionally had flights of fancy about getting a "proper" job. (And I still do. Only this time last week, I found myself offering to manage a jazz band!!) However, for various reasons, I've recently been seriously exploring other freelancing options that I can do alongside writing and have now decided to "rebrand" myself as a writer, a crafter and a musician. I also plan to carry on working on community newsletters and do something in the spiritual healing/growth area a...

Shortlisted in the Writer's Toolkit Flash Fiction Competition

Hi everyone. A good writing week this week, despite the distractions of the cricket and the tennis, possibly because my portfolio career has been suspended, pending further enquiries (don't tell my patrons!) and I've been at my desk every night. Long may it continue! I said in my last post that I was recently shortlisted (top ten) in the Writer's Toolkit flash fiction competition. The competition brief was to write a short story of 150 words or less on the theme of 'Secrets'. My story actually came out at exactly 150 words because at the last minute, after I'd sealed the envelope, I suddenly panicked and decided that the wording of the rules could mean that the story had to be exactly 150 words. Mine was 149 if I remember correctly and it was surprisingly difficult to add that extra word! Apparently the competition attracted 182 entries (which I must admit was quite a surprise) and entries came from several European countries as well as the UK. I was particu...

Setting Quotas

Does anyone else set quotas for how much work they send out every week, month etc or is that just me? I decided a while back that I was probably never going to send anything out if I didn't set a quota and for various reasons I decided that six items a month was right for me. Like lots of ideas, it is probably good in theory and so far I have managed to keep to my quota. Unfortunately, the theory seems to fall down when I find myself (usually on the last day of the month!) desperately scratching around trying to find somewhere to send something in an effort to meet my quota. A few weeks ago, while in this predicament, I came across Healthy  magazine in a well-known health food store. I noticed that they offered fifty pounds worth of vouchers to spend in store for the writer of the star letter. Desperate to fulfill my quota and hopeful of winning the top prize, I duly sent off a letter. The email was returned by the "postmaster" for some reason, so ...
